Both as a curator at the Austrian Museum of Art and Industry (today MAK) and as a full professor at the University of Vienna, and finally as general curator of the kk Central Commission for the Research and Preservation of Art and Historical Monuments, Riegl took fundamentally new paths in art research, which were more innovative content has often only been recognized recently. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his death, a prominent symposium took place in Vienna in late autumn 2005, the contributions of which - sometimes in a greatly expanded form - are collected in this volume.
