Out of opposition to Adolf Hitler, she became a communist, became involved in the resistance, was convicted and narrowly escaped execution. When she could hardly get any more construction contracts in Vienna during the Cold War, she worked in Cuba, East Berlin and China. In her life and work she combined politics, pragmatism and pioneering spirit.
